Too close to call?

X (first pic) was the co-founder of a party which he presently chairs. He won an important election in September, 2005, but chose not to assume the position of A, thinking it would harm the chances of Y (second pic) in another important election that was held in October, 2005. Y went on to win that election, and after differences arose between Y & Z (who assumed the post instead of X), Z resigned and X took over in 2006.
This convoluted series of events led to a unique instance in this country's history. The pics should give that away.
