Scientists, not lucky enough!

Fake is a fickle mistress and some inventors had the dubious honor of dying by the very inventions and discoveries that brought them accolades. Identify the scientists and their inventions/discoveries:

a)This Noble prize winner spent all the time in studying the isotopic elements, and ultimately succumbed to aplastic anemia because of continuous exposure to these elements. The research papers of this great scientist are kept in lead-lined boxes, to prevent the today's researchers from having the same fate.

b)The first two human passengers to fly as well as the first known fatalities of an air crash. It was in 1785, when they were trying to cross the English Channel that their invention suddenly collapsed and crashed, killing them both.

c)This pharmaceutical chemist, who is credited for discovering a number of chemicals, met his untimely death due to his long-standing habit of either sniffing out or tasting his discoveries when he tasted X, an extremely poisonous liquid. Who was he and what is this X?

Sticky Fire *Sounds Interesting*

Use of fire in warfare has a long history. Greek fire, also described as "sticky fire" is believed to have had a petroleum base. The development of X was precipitated by the use of jellied gasoline mixtures by the Allied forces during World War II. The supply of latex that had been used in these early forms of incendiary devices became scarce in the Pacific Theater of Operations, since natural rubber was almost impossible to obtain after the Japanese army captured the rubber plantations. X was developed in 1942 in a secret laboratory at Harvard University by a team led by chemist Louis Fieser. Its first recorded use was in the European theatre of war during World War II. It is believed to have been formulated to burn at a specific rate and to adhere to surfaces to increase its stopping power. During combustion, X rapidly deoxygenates the available air and generates large amounts of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. On 4 July 1942, the first test occurred on the football field near the Harvard Business School. When used as a part of an incendiary weapon, X can cause severe burns (ranging from superficial to subdermal), asphyxiation, unconsciousness, and death. One of the main anti-personnel features of X is that it sticks to human skin, with no practical method for removal of the burning substance.

What is the event X?

The event X first happened in 1972, and has been held 25 times since then. The 2012 X crashed websites like Reddit and Gawker Media and caused Airline Delays. Google however remained unaffected by this as it uses something called the ____ smear which helps them prepare better for X. X happens on either 30th June or 31st December. What is X?

Light 'em up!

The first Xs were converted flintlock pistols that used gunpowder. One of the first Xs was invented by the German chemist named Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in 1823 and was often called Döbereiner's lamp. The device was very large and highly dangerous and fell out of production by the end of the 19th century.
The patenting of ferrocerium by Carl Auer von Welsbach in 1903 has made modern Xs possible. When scratched, it produces a large spark which is responsible for doing its thing, and is suitably inexpensive for use in disposable items.

Surely, You're Joking Mr. Feynman !

  • X was in news in 2009 regarding a sport Y. It became a topic of heated debate and eventually ended with the rules and regulations of Y being modified.
  • The concept of X was first postulated by Richard Feynman in the 1950s.
  • It is exemplified in complex high end systems such as the Zytek, Flybird,Torotrak and Xtrac used in the sport.
