An oil expert claimed that a nuclear explosion was the only way X could permanently seal the well and cited successful Soviet attempts to seal off runaway gas wells with nuclear blasts. Though thankfully, it wasn't implemented.
The oil spill that the the expert claimed to cap claimed 11 lives and is considered as one of the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of petroleum industry. The oil spill was caused due to explosion of Y oil rig and its consequent sinking. The US Government estimated the total discharge at 4.9 million barrels. After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on 19 September 2010. Some reports indicate the well site continues to leak.
