Just another happy ending?

In the initial films of X, X had been portrayed as a hero minding his own business on a ________ captained by the villain or as an Argentinian cowboy. X then happened to meet Y, and this meeting appeared rather unamusing to the villain. Hence followed some grim circumstances and a little bit struggle, after which, the movies often concluded with a happy ending.
The recent movies of X includes adaptations of books by celebrated authors like Dickens and Mark Twain. ID X and Y.
*partly blanked because it would have been a giveaway.
