Advertising gone wrong, probably in a good way!

X is a brand of open source __. Anybody can make it, and anyone can modify and improve on it as long as they, too, license the instructions under the GNU General Public License.
The original version 1.0 was released in early January in 2001. The current Version is 1.1.3. Although originally intended as a promotional tool to explain free and open source software, X took on a life of its own and 150,000 units were sold. The Toronto-based company X became better known for the promotional product, than the software itself that it was supposed to promote.
ID X.

PS - The name of the company and the promotional product have the same name.
