NTPC Electron 2009 - National Round Review

NTPC Electron 2009 conducted its national round on 23rd December, with 15 teams from all over the country, at the Power Management Institute, Noida.

The Quizmasters for the evening were Andrew Sloat (Semi-finals) and Derek O’ Brien (for the finals). 3 Sets of semi-finals were held, from where the top two from each set qualified for the finals. Andrew did a fair job of conducting the semi-finals.

After the semi-finals, the finalists included ISB, Hyderabad; Jadavpur University, Kolkata; NM ITM, Mumbai; SP Jain Institute of Management, Mumbai; NSIT, Delhi and ICFAI Business School Hyderabad.

Derek O’ Brien did a good job of conducting the finals. Even though the content was poor at some places and decent at best, he does manage to pull it off nonetheless. Full marks to him for making it an ‘inclusive’ quiz, if I may call it so, in the sense that the audience was kept involved and in good spirits, even if that meant the content of the finals was ‘HR-theme based’ questions, in Derek's words and disappointing, in mine.

The standard was not very uniform, and that can hurt a lot in a big quiz. Nonetheless, ISB Hyderabad ran away with the quiz right from the start, with a fabulous display of quizzing. ICFAI Business School came 2nd, SP Jain came third, followed by NSIT, Jadavpur Univ and NM ITM respectively. Belated best wishes to the ISB team, who had exams starting 2 days after the finals. :-)

ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad were represented as always by Raja Satish and co. (whose annual sightings at NTPC have been documented here). Later, Raja Satish went on to say, "I won't be coming next year. I'll be graduating as this is my 2nd year." We wish him all the best for his graduation, but I won't be surprised to see him again next year, considering his great love for NTPC Electron and the graciousness with which NTPC continues to welcome him year after year. Anyway, peace.

Sample Questions:
1. What is a ganga-jamuna saree?
2. What was made by Fariborz Sahba by importing marble from Greece?
3. In royal kingdoms, certain recipes were considered to be closely guarded secrets, so much so that women of the house were not even allowed to enter the kitchen. Why was this done?
4.Complete the quote: The only way of making money in Las Vegas is to _____.
5. ID the Book.

Happy New Year to all! :-)
