Kaustuba, Nakki, Navin Pai, and peter were all watching the watchmen. Although, the answer I liked the most was the one given by peter [check the comments]. Ankit Mahendru didn't see Nite Owl saving the day.
Answer: More of a homage to Batman. Nite Owl is seen punching some crook while Thomas and Martha Wayne look on. They have just come out of Gotham Opera House [obscured by the text in the image, here] after watching Die Fladermaus [The Bat, and not Zorro]. In this universe, Bruce Wayne, therefore never becomes the world's greatest detective [Rorschach fills in, sometimes :) ] Sad ofcourse, coz Batman would've kicked Ozymandias' ass.

Terrible tragedy averted, I should say..
Bruce wayne's parents were saved by night owl.
Nite Owl trying to save Batman's parents.
(But batman posters are seen in the background....)

Its the start of Batman...Actually the robber kills Bruce Wayne's parents pushing him over the edge to his well known alter ego....but here the Niteowl punches the robber...nore or less stopping the whole Batman series for having ever started!!
Thats Mr. and Mrs. Wayne (parents of batman) being protected by the nite owl's punch.
If this did indeed happen then the tragedy by my inference is that there is no Batman(and subsequently no Batman Begins no Dark Knight also Heath Ledger might still be alive that would be a good thing though)
