What creatures supposedly lurk in the New York City sewer system?
This Urban Legend really flourished in the 1930s, and was written up in the 'New York Times' more than once. Supposedly tourists would buy baby _____X_____ in Florida, then flush them or dump then down sewer grates when they grew too big to manage. The _____X_____ would thrive in the sewers, living off rats and occasional sewer workers. They've grown huge, lost their pigmentation, and gone blind. They're still down there, living among enormous, white marijuana plants which sprouted from seeds flushed during drug raids.
Identify X?

Answer  :  Alligators

Crocodiles...but this is just an urban legend...biologically speaking, crocs can't survive in a sewage system bereft of any sunlight
