NTPC Electron National Round

NTPC Electon Quiz National Round saw 15 teams from across the country assemble here in Delhi. There were 3 semi finals of 5 teams each - 2 teams qualifying from each round making a total of 6 teams for the finals.

The teams that made it to the finals were IIT Kharagpur, IIM Kolkata, SJMSOM IIT Bombay, IIM Lucknow, NMIMS Mumbai and NSIT, Delhi ( yours truly and Roshan ).

The quiz , like all big budget quizzes , was more about a great show than about great quizzing. The formats for the semi-finals and finals werent exactly very fair - one of the rounds in the finals even had +5 for a direct and +10 if the question is a pass. Coupled with the fact that most questions were you know it or you dont type, luck played a great deal in determining who won. Derek O Brien did a good job of presenting the quiz, with customary wisecracks that attracted the audience attention.

The final Results were :

SJMSOM, IIT Bombay won the quiz on a tie breaker. IIT Kharagpur and IIM Kolkata finished 2nd and 3rd. We finished 4th, IIM Lucknow 5th and NMIMS 6th.

NTPC , as earlier, were heavy with lunch, dinner and 2 teas in between. One would be forgiven to think this was just a eating and drinking session, rather than a quiz.

Sample Questions :

1. What is the cost of the costliest dish in Virender Sehwag's restaurant in Delhi ?

2. What replaced the King's photo in the Nepalese currency ? [ Yes, I know, this one's repeated itself too many times ]

3. Which company in the 1880's first introduced disposable syringes?

4. In respect to Central banks and Stock markets, what is 'The Tendulkar Theory'?

5. Which is the largest source of revenue for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ?

1. 319 ??
2. Mount Everest
3.
4. 'Tendulkar theory of swinging rates'.
Drawing a parallel with Tendulkar, the theory states that just as he anticipates the bowler's delivery and accordingly moves his feet and hits a boundary, the market today can anticipate what the central bank is going to do. Thus the markets are so accustomed to gestures and signals from the central bank that they can now perfectly time a rate hike, and take self-corrective action against inflation.

Watched the National Finals, easily the quality of questions and the quiz at the regional level was much better.. The Finals was more of a party rather than a quiz.. The only solace is that - thank god the quizmaster didnt get anyone married on the stage like the proposition gimmick we all saw at ICFAI.. NTPC's food and hospitality as usual was good.
