Catalysis - Quiz at Hindu College

So the DU quizzing season has started in full flow and the reviews duly follow. :-)

The quiz at Hindu College was part of Catalysis - the fest of their Chemistry Department. As is obvious, a quiz in DU, that too of one of their departments, and conducted by a fellow student who didn't seem to be a regular in the quizzing circuit didn't do much to increase our expectations from the quiz.

However, as wary as we seemed of the quiz to turn out to be an ultra-shady affair, we were proved wrong. The prelims consisted of 15 questions, which although had a good number of repeats (3 from Mahaquizzer '08 itself), the sources were numerous and the standard was, on the whole, difficult.

The finals were pretty decent. 5 rounds, shortened a bit towards the end due to shortage of time.3 rounds of gen, 1 round on entertainment, which was biased towards hindi films, a round on sports and another on connects.

Even though this quiz had its share of repeats, the quizmaster seemed to have tried hard to find questions from highly varied sources, and to frame the question in his own way, adding more info in some places. His temperamental attitude in a few situations didn't seem to rub-off too well with some of the participants, but overall he did a good job of conducting the quiz. A good quiz, made highly memorable by a fair maiden in the audience, whose smile caught the fancy of yours truly. :-)

Some good questions from the quiz:

2. "I think that in human evolution it has never been necessary to have this substance. It is just a tool to turn us into what we're supposed to be." X on what, something invented by X in the 40's ?

3.The first one was built by the Roman of wood, the second one was pulled down in 1831 on account of its poor safety record(immortalized in song), the third one was sold to Lake Havasu, Arizona in the 1970's and the fourth one still stands. What?

4.Google loses around $110 million in its annual revenues due to this. What?

Answers:
1. Christopher Nolan is the connect. HM,Dark Knight. Joseph Nolan. Go figure.
2. Albert Hoffman on LSD
3.London Bridge
4. I'm Feeling Lucky (as it bypasses the advertising...)
