A really convoluted one shot! :-)

Y was X's 1972 album's closing song. According to an interview he gave several years later, he received a phone call from a member of his ex-group, but he could not hear anyone on the other side. The song was written in a stream of consciousness style of writing.
Y didn't turn out to be a particularly famous song. A certain rock band Z wrote a song W, which quite generously used Y's opening riff, and in turn immortalizing it as one of their most memorable songs, a fitting tribute to their founding member who left the band.
Give me all you know in it! :-)

Y = Almost Independence Day
X Van Morrison
Z = Pink Floyd
W = Wish You Were Here

Dude... Get your facts right before you post questions. Show me ONE authentic site that says that Floyd nicked the opening riff.
