Dry and Easy

1. ____________ is a word that means someone who is super-sentimental and gushing, who cries easily and without much cause. The word _____________ is also applied to those who have been made silly and foolish by too much drinking. The word has an odd history. X who washed the feet of Christ, has often been pictured with her eyes red from weeping. In time the name X was contracted in to the adjective ____________. Name the word & X.

2. First developed by Hormel in 1926, X was called ‘the Miracle Meat’, and promoted as anytime meat. In 1940, it was the subject of, quite possibly, the first singing commercial. The jingle was to the tune of the chorus of ‘My bonny lies over the ocean’, and the lyrics were: ‘X X X X Hormel’s new miracle meat in a can, Tastes fine, saves time. If you want something grand ask for X!’ Nikita Kruschev credited X with the survival of the Russian Army during World War II. Now though, we know X in a totally different context. Identify X.

3. It was the Andre Courreges show in Paris in 1964 that started it. They debuted in UK in December 1965 when they were first spotted in King’s Road, Chelsea. They became an instant hit and soon became a phenomenon of ‘swinging’ London. They even created a tax problem in the UK and rules had to be drawn up in 1965 to sort it out. What revolutionary product am I talking about?

4. Queen Artemisia and her husband used to rule over the kingdom of Caria in Asia Minor in the forth century BC. When the king died in 353 BC, his inconsolable queen preserved his ashes, which she later added bit by bit, to her drinks until they were all consumed. She then died of grief herself a couple of years later. Before her death, however, she commissioned the great architects and sculptors of the day to build a spectacular monument to her late husband. Named after the dead king, this was regarded as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’. Name the king and the word derived from his name.

5. X joined the MCC ground-staff at Lord's in 1934. By the late 1930s X was a leading England batsman and remained at the top of his profession for almost three decades. X’s dashing approach to batting and the sheer enjoyment X exuded endeared him to a generation of cricket lovers. As an all-rounder X was a right hand bat and a slow left arm Chinaman bowler. X scored his first Test century as a precocious 19 year old in 1938 against Don Bradman's touring Australians. X lost some of his best years to the Second World War, during which he served in the army in India. It was in India, however, that X began his close friendship with his Australian counterpart as cricketer & footballer, Keith Miller. In recognition of their friendship and rivalry, the ECB and Cricket Australia decided in 2005 that the player adjudged the Player of the Series in the Ashes would be awarded the X-Miller medal. X also played football, beginning his career at non-league Nunhead F.C. during the 1934/35 season before joining Arsenal. A winger, X made his debut in 1936, and won the League in 1948 and the FA Cup in 1950. X was also honored with the creation of the X stand at the Nursery End in Lord's Cricket Ground. Who is X?
