The Theory paper

These post is dedicated to all the great scientists who made outstanding contributions to the human civilization but at the same time managed to make life in the 2nd semester quite difficult.Happy quizzing!

1. Identify

Ferdinand Georg ________ held applied mathematics in great disdain. It is ironic that much of his fundamental work on finite groups has important applications in quantum mechanics and theoretical physics.



2. "If I had been rich, I would probably not have devoted myself to mathematics."
"It took them only an instant to cut off that head, and a 100 years may not produce another like it."

3.Identify again.


(2. and 3. are considered to be the greatest mathematicians of the 18th century. 3 is also considere the original creator of Sudoku.)

4.Identify this "Beloved" duo.



5.Edwin Herbert ________ was born in Maine, USA in 1855. He graduated and did his PhD from John Hopkins University. During this period, he discovered __________,which is what took him into the textbooks.

6. Identify this renowned scientist.(No need for an introduction)

7. __________ is believed to have 'rediscovered' this concept after Hermann von Helmholtz discovered it originally 30 years before. The concept is widely known by this man's name. In 1926, a person from Bell Laboratories found a variation and thus managed to make it to our textbooks. (Sigh!). Name the man and the Bell Labs guy.

I don't know whether your answer to 7 fits the question.But your answer is not part of the 2nd semester syllabus, at least for me.
