Scientists once more

Many illustrious scientists were left out in the last edition of the quiz. Plus since 2 of my practicals still remain, I am in an academic mood. So, here's another round of questions for the luminaries who have made us happy as well as miserable.
Happy Quizzing!
1.
"The weight of evidence for an extraordinary claim must be proportioned to its strangeness."

"What we know is not much. What we do not know is immense."

Whose enlightening words?

2.Petrus Josephus Wilhelmus __________ later changed his name officially to Peter Joseph William ________. In 2006 January, a book by Sybe Rispens entitled Einstein in the Netherlands commented that _______ was actively involved in cleansing German scientific institutions from Jewish and 'Non-Aryan elements', including Einstein himself. Though this is debatable, it is very much a fact that _______ has been a part of class 11,12 and now 1st year in engineering.

3. A sitter- Identify

4. This man made contributions to the field of differential calculus, statics and mechanics. He was a good friend of Newton, Bernoulli and Leibnitz(as per Wikipedia, though with Newton and Leibnitz at war with each other, I can't understand quite how he befriended both!). Identify him.

5. Identify this amazing trio.

6. Identify this "beloved" duo who have been forming an integral part of the 'physics of materials' paper for the past few years, though not this time.

7. And finally-
X is a professor who won the Best Teachers Award for the year 1990-1991 on 5th September 1997. Among his varied quotes , the one I liked the best is:
"Devotion to duty is not a sacrifice, it is a justification of your existence in this world."
Should be easy for those who study their books.
